Steve Lubow has worked on the design and development of a variety of database systems for the Hubble Space Telescope. His most recent work has focused on the Hubble Legacy Archive (hla.stsci.edu) and the Hubble Source Catalog (archive.stsci.edu/hst/hsc/). The Hubble Legacy Archive (HLA) is designed to optimize science from the Hubble Space Telescope by providing online, enhanced Hubble products and advanced browsing capabilities. The Hubble Source Catalog (HSC) is designed to optimize science from the Hubble Space Telescope by combining the tens of thousands of visit-based source lists in the HLA into a single master catalog. He and Tamas Budavari (Johns Hopkins) started the Hubble Source Catalog project about 8 years ago.
After completing his PhD, Steve was a postdoctoral fellow at UCLA and at the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton). His research has concentrated on the theory of disks in a variety of contexts. Most recently, his work has concentrated the dynamics of disks and planets that are on tilted orbits with respect to the orbital plane of a binary star system. He has published more than 100 papers in the Astrophysical Journal and the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. He regularly referees papers for Astronomy & Astrophysics, the Astrophysical Journal, and the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.
