Laura Watkins

Postdoctoral Fellow

Laura joined STScI in 2013 as a postdoctoral researcher in the HSTPROMO group, working with Roeland van der Marel. Before coming to Baltimore, she was a postdoc at the MPIA in Heidelberg working with Glenn van de Ven, and a graduate student at the University of Cambridge, working with Wyn Evans and Vasily Belokurov. Her research combines theory and observations to understand the formation, evolution, and current dynamical state of stellar systems, with a particular interest in globular clusters.

Education:

PhD in Astronomy, University of Cambridge
MSci in Astronomy, University of Cambridge
MA in Natural Sciences, University of Cambridge

Science Interests:

  • Internal kinematics of globular clusters, and the imprints left by their formation and evolution histories.
  • Discrete dynamical modelling of globular clusters and other low-mass stellar systems.
  • Dynamics of the globular cluster and dwarf galaxy populations in the Milky Way.
  • Analysis of large proper-motion datasets from HST and Gaia.

Research Topics: Local Group Galaxies; Star Clusters; Resolved Stellar Populations
