Galactic Winds and the Circumgalactic Medium

The fate of baryons in a galaxy is governed by the complex interplay between gas entering the galaxy through mergers and accretion flows, star formation within the galaxy, and gas outflowing from the galaxy. All gas phases and dust are participating in this cosmic ballet. This presentation will focus on the impact of starburst- and quasar-driven outflows on galaxy evolution. The results from recent multi-wavelength surveys of gas and dust flows out of nearby galaxies will be reviewed and interpreted in the context of these galaxies' ecosystems. New constraints on the circumgalactic medium in distant galaxies will also be presented to constrain the impact of starburst-and AGN-driven processes in the past. This presentation will conclude with a discussion of some of the open issues and promising new avenues of research to address them.
